Information on Ladybirds

Harlequin ladybirds were first spotted in southeast England in 2004, rapidly expanding north and west. These predators outcompete native ladybirds for green fly and scale insects. When food is scarce, they prey on native ladybirds, butterfly eggs, caterpillars, and lacewing larvae.

Harlequin ladybirds are around 7mm long and come in black, red, or yellow with various spot numbers. Ladybirds have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults lay eggs on host plants in early spring, hatching in 3-5 days. The larval stage lasts 12-14 days, followed by a pupal stage on leaves of fruit trees or plants for 5-6 days. In cooler springs, development can take 36 days or longer. Adults may live 2-3 years, and a single female can lay over 1,000 eggs.

Ladybird Infestations

Identifying a Ladybird Infestation

Homes or businesses are likely affected by Harlequin ladybirds, which arrived in the UK from Asia in 2004 and spread across the country. They have about 15-20 spots on their backs. While Harlequins don’t pose a public health risk, they can infest spaces in large numbers, disrupting daily life until eradicated.

Ladybird Infestations & Risks

Introduced into Europe from Asia as a biological control for greenfly, Harlequin ladybirds crossed into England and spread west. Their peak activity is in autumn, but they may wander indoors on mild winter days. Disturbed ladybirds produce a foul-smelling liquid that may stain fabrics but don’t harm buildings or pose significant health risks to pets or humans. Large numbers outside or inside buildings can concern residents.

Ladybird Pest Control

If ladybirds are a problem indoors, use a vacuum cleaner or an aerosol or residual insecticide spray for removal. All Natures Way treatments are HSE approved, and it’s safe to return to treated rooms after a few hours. Keep pets out of affected areas for at least 24 hours.

Typically, it takes up to 60 minutes for our technician to complete a risk assessment, treatment, and brief the customer on actions and next steps. However, this may extend if the infestation is widespread or other hazards exist. Avoid cleaning or vacuuming treated areas for 14 days.

The infestation should start to diminish post-treatment, but our technician can revisit after 14 days if necessary. Some infestations, particularly in commercial or multi-occupancy buildings, may require additional visits to fully eradicate activity.
